2014 Earth Day

IEA Celebrated it’s 10th Annual Earth Day Fair with Supervisor Greg Cox and I Love a Clean San Diego earlier this April. The event included 16 booths, comprised of County Departments, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations, set-up in the Courtyard of the County Operations Center. The theme of the day was “Teaching the 5 R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover.” There were educational booths to teach attendees about recycling, including information on food waste recycling and composting. Other booths shared best practices for sustainability at work and at home. At the event we collected and recycled 225 pounds of batteries and 20 pounds of compact fluorescent light bulbs. More than 125 attendees signed a pledge to join an Energy Efficiency program with Energy Star and in return they received a new and efficient compact fluorescent light bulb. Goodwill displayed their new community drop-off boxes while they collected used clothing and other items.
As a part of the event, IEA and Supervisor Cox announced the recipients of the Sustainable Business Awards for 2014. These companies took the 5 R’s from theory to results in their daily operations. Some of the awardees reduced energy and water use at their facilities, while others minimized waste generation and organized groups to work in the community on clean-up and restoration projects.
